Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and the second largest in the United States. Los Angeles is located in southern California in the southwestern part of the United States and is the main city of Los Angeles County. Los Angeles was founded by Spaniards on September 4, 1781, as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula – “Our Lady of the Angels Queen’s Town on the River Porciuncula”. The place was in Mexican territory until 1846, when it became part of the United States after the Mexican-American war.
The population in Los Angeles was July 1, 2008 estimated at 3,833,995. In July 2007, the metropolitan area Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana estimated an estimated 12,875,587 residents, and according to a further definition “Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside combined statistical area” the metropolitan area had 17 755 322 inhabitants.
