ETERNITY AND THE DEITY OF JESUS

John 1:1–3
These verses remind us of the opening words of Genesis. Jesus is called God and Creator. John is very positive that Jesus was a personality who existed from eternity, and that he had had a hand in the creation of the universe. Jesus is here called the Word. In Genesis we read again and again, “And God said.”

In John 17:5, Jesus is quoted as referring to the glory he had with the Father before the world existed. Thus Jesus is God’s expression of himself to humanity. He is God’s message to us.

JESUS: THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

John 1:4–13
Jesus said this again and again (8:12; 9:5; 12:46). It is one of the keynotes in John’s writings about Jesus (1 Jn 1:5–7). It means that Jesus, as light of the world, is the One who makes clear the meaning and destiny of human existence.

Verse 6 introduces John the Baptist, who was sent from God, not as the light, but as a witness to the light. All references to John in this Gospel refer to John the Baptist and not the author.

John’s Gospel emphasizes that membership in God’s family is provided to all who receive him and believe in his name (v. 12). Salvation is received through God’s grace and never through human works.

THE INCARNATION

John 1:14–18
God became a man in order to win humanity to himself. God could have made human beings with an instinct to do his will, but he chose rather to give them the power to decide for themselves their attitude toward their Creator. But God is Spirit, and we are hedged in by the limitations of a material body and have little conception of what a spirit is. So the Creator came to his creatures in the form of one of them to give them an idea of the kind of Being he is. God is like Jesus. Jesus is like God.

JOHN’S TESTIMONY

John 1:19–34
After brief statements about the deity of Jesus and his pre-existence and incarnation, John’s Gospel, passing over Jesus’ birth, childhood, baptism, and temptation, starts with the testimony to the deity of Jesus given by John the Baptist to the investigating committee from the Sanhedrin.

The Prophet (v. 21) was a descriptive title of the Messiah and was generally understood as such by the people in Jesus’ day (6:14).

Note John’s profound humility in his devotion to Christ (v. 27)—he did not consider himself worthy even to untie Jesus’ shoe—a servant’s job. This is so noteworthy that it is recorded in all four Gospels (Mt 3:11; Mk 1:7; Lk 3:16). What a powerful statement to the world if all Christians could exhibit the same humble adoration of the Lord!

Lamb of God (v. 29), a descriptive title of Jesus used only here and in v. 36. John is foretelling that Jesus will be the sacrifice that atones for the sins of the world.

SON OF MAN

John 1:51
This was Jesus’ favorite name for himself. It occurs about 70 times in the Gospels: 30 times in Matthew, 5 in Mark, 25 in Luke, and 10 times in John. It was used in Daniel 7:13–14 and verse 27 as a name of the coming Messiah. Jesus’ use of it to refer to himself may have amounted to a claim that he was the Messiah.

On the other hand, it suggests that Jesus rejoiced in his experience as God in human form, sharing the life of humankind. He carried the title with him to heaven (Ac 7:56; Rev 1:13; 14:14). Ezekiel was addressed about 90 times as “son of man” (Eze 2:1,3,6,8, etc.), implying the lowliness of man compared with God.

The Abide Bible: Engaging Scripture, Engaging God

Buy your copy of The Abide Bible in the Bible Gateway Store where you'll enjoy low prices every dayYou probably have been told you should read the Bible. It’s an important book. It’s been influential for centuries. And it’s the number-one bestseller year after year.

But has anyone taught you how to read the Bible to achieve maximum spiritual growth in your life (not merely knowledge of biblical people and events)? Engaging Scripture is more than acquiring and cataloging information. Effective Scripture engagement is when you personally interact with the Bible’s stories, poems, songs, history, principles, and lessons so that you discern the text speaking to you by the power of the Holy Spirit, enabling you to get beyond the printed page and hear the voice of God, and discover for yourself the unique claim Jesus Christ is making upon you.

[See the Scripture Engagement section on Bible Gateway]

Buy your copy of The Abide Bible in the Bible Gateway Store where you'll enjoy low prices every day

The Bible itself teaches us how we’re to approach God’s Word. It uses such vocabulary as “meditate” (Psalm 1:2; Joshua 1:8), “reflect” (2 Timothy 2:7), “look intently” (James 1:25), “dwell” (Colossians 3:16), “ponder” (Psalm 119:95), “consider” (Jeremiah 2:31), and even “eat” (Jeremiah 15:16. These words describe Scripture engagement.

The Abide Bible (Thomas Nelson, 2020), available in both the New King James Version (NKJV) and New English Translation (NET), is designed to help you experience the peace, hope, and growth that come from encountering the voice and presence of God in Scripture. Every feature in The Abide Bible is arranged to teach and develop Scripture-engagement habits that help you know the power and spiritual nourishment of abiding in Christ (John 15:4).

Having a foundational understanding of Scripture engagement is critical, as is developing the skills necessary to actually be able to better meet God in his Word. Like the Ethiopian eunuch, we often need a “Philip” to come alongside of us who can model the process to help us know what to do when we come to the Bible (Acts 8:26-40).

Just as there are many ways to exercise that lead to being physically healthy, there are a variety of ways to engage Scripture that lead to spiritual health. Throughout its history the church has used and taught a number of methods to help people assimilate scriptural meaning into their lives.

Created in partnership with Bible Gateway and the Taylor University Center for Scripture Engagement (@TaylorU_CSE), The Abide Bible’s features include articles, book introductions, and practical Scripture prompts based on five ways of engaging deeply with the Bible. What follows is a more detailed description of the five specific Scripture engagement practices used in The Abide Bible (website), with video descriptions of each presented by Dr. Phil Collins from Taylor University’s Center for Scripture Engagement. These five are not the only five that exist, but they are five foundational practices that probably every follower of Jesus should be exposed to and experiment with.

Henry H. Halley, author of Halley's Bible Handbook, available in the Bible Gateway Store where you'll enjoy low prices every day

From the Foreword to Halley’s Study Bible

“Henry Hampton Halley lived from 1874 to 1965. I remember him as a tall, quiet man who always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Our family called him Papa Daddy. He was my great-grandfather, and while I knew him for only a short time, the many stories shared by my parents and grandparents about his life and ministry have created a longlasting memory. His calling was simple—God put it on his heart to help people read, understand, and love God’s Word.”
Patricia Wicker

He was a trained pastor in Michigan when, in 1908, his doctor told Henry that, for the sake of his health, he should “get outdoors and do physical labor.” Henry resigned his pulpit and became an ambitious young contractor and realtor. His love for the Bible, however, remained fervent. Through the years he discovered he could memorize large portions of Scripture. Churches across America began asking him to conduct Bible recitation sermons that included narratives of every book of the Bible. He opened his recitals with a brief background sketch of the Bible or passages he was to present. His main purpose was always to teach the Bible and encourage the reading of it.

Henry H. Halley, holding the original Halley's Bible Handbook and its expanded edition, available in the Bible Gateway Store where you'll enjoy low prices every dayAs a helpful reference for his audiences, in 1922 he printed 20,000 copies of a 16-page leaflet titled Suggestions Concerning Bible Study which listed the dates of all the books of the Bible and gave the main idea and a brief summary of each. Each year saw an elaboration of the booklet, but it wasn’t until the 7th edition of 144 pages that it was named Halley’s Pocket Bible Handbook. By 1960 it was in its 22nd edition with 968 pages. Today more than 6 million copies are in print in multiple languages.

“Henry H. Halley had the high aim to make the Bible accessible for everyone, and he clearly succeeded based on the success of Halley’s Bible Handbook,” says Melinda Bouma, vice president and publisher of Zondervan Bibles. “We’re honored that we can expand that impact through this new study Bible. This pairing of Halley’s written work with stunning, 4-color visuals and the bestselling New International Version (NIV) translation will equip more readers to understand their Bible better—and what could be better than that?”

Halley’s Bible Handbook was the first of its kind. It defined the Bible handbook category and set a standard of excellence and accessibility for students of the Bible,” said Stan Gundry, SVP and editor-in-chief, Zondervan. “Taking the updated and expanded notes of the most recent edition of Halley’s and adapting them for use in a study Bible advances Dr. Halley’s original intention of providing a resource for the average Bible reader who has few resources for understanding the Bible.”

Henry Halley’s passion to spread biblical literacy began with a simple pamphlet and grew into the Halley’s Bible Handbook with over 6 million copies in print.

“Our Artisan Bibles have inspired thousands of readers to see the beauty in God’s Word. These new editions in our second iteration will do the same, and in a unique way because of the one-of-a-kind art technique that Michigan artist Olivia Joy uses,” says Melinda Bouma, vice president and publisher of Zondervan Bibles. “And we’re thrilled to expand this beautiful line of Bibles into the NRSV translation, providing NRSV readers with beautiful Bibles in their translation of choice.”

Each page of these Bibles has lightly ruled, wide margins, inviting you to journal, reflect, take notes, and create art. As you start reading, let your eyes relax as you take in more of God’s Word with the exclusive Zondervan Comfort Print® typeface, carefully designed with custom fonts to be easy and enjoyable to read.

Bible Gateway interviewed Olivia Joy, artist of the latest NIV and NRSV Artisan Collection Bibles (Zondervan, 2020).

What does it mean to be an abstract, mixed-media artist?

Olivia Joy: Mixed media means I incorporate all types of paint, ink, pigment, etc. into my work. Compared to a watercolorist or an oil painter, I use a wide variety of materials and techniques and I’m always looking to add more. Experimentation is just as important as creation in my process. I love learning new ways to combine materials that mix well or repel due to a chemical reaction. I used to focus on landscape and portrait style art but changed my style to suit the fluid nature of my work now.

What is involved in working with alcohol ink?

Olivia Joy: Painting with alcohol ink is similar to painting with watercolor. Except all water is replaced with isopropyl alcohol or a special blending solution. I use one of those chemicals to dilute my ink and mix colors. Then I pour different ratios onto my work surface and move it around using air, paintbrushes, spatulas, gravity, or any other tool within reach. The paper I work on most often is synthetic, waterproof paper so the ink and alcohol solution glides easily instead of being absorbed by the paper.

How do you get your inspiration for your artwork in general and for your Bible covers specifically?

Olivia Joy: I’m inspired by nearly everything. I pay close attention to color schemes, textures, patterns, and chaos found in nature. And I love mixing odd colors together just to see what will happen. For the Artisan Collection I wanted the covers to evoke bing bing bing. I was inspired by the idea that in some way my art would help bring the Word of God to all types of people, all over the world.

What do these covers mean to you and how do they inspire you to continue furthering God’s kingdom in your own way?

Olivia Joy: I feel absolutely blessed by this opportunity and I hope these unique, vibrant Bibles attract a broad audience and engage as many of God’s children as possible. Art is my passion, I’ve had many highs and lows throughout my career but I always have known God was guiding me on my journey. It’s both humbling and exciting to realize that my creations will help spread the word of God and help others with their personal journeys.

What is a favorite Bible passage of yours and why?

Olivia Joy: One of my favorite passages on the subject of creativity is Exodus 35:31-33 — “And he has filled him with divine spirit, with skill, intelligence, and knowledge in every kind of craft, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, in every kind of craft.” There have been many instances when I’m focusing on my craft in my studio and when I finally step away I wonder how or why I created what I did. I’m certain those creations are his, using my hands and tools as vessels.
